12 Apps for Car Lovers

We’ve trawled the web for inspiration and recommendations for the best smartphone apps for car drivers, ‘cause let’s face it, apps can help make our lives easier. Here’s our round up of the best smartphone apps for car lovers that not only improve your road safety, but improve your driving skills and your overall driving experience.

1 – Learn to drive

Obviously these apps are aimed at learners and not experienced drivers, but there are some useful apps out there that help you become a safer driver and prepare for your theory and hazard perception tests. The AA has a free theory test app for budding drivers to swot up on their theory knowledge, and DriveScribe is an app made specifically for beginners who are still learning the ropes and is available on both iOS and Android. It acts like your virtual driving instructor, and keeps a track of your driving ability so you can constantly improve.

2 – Get a parking spot

Wouldn’t it be great to set off on your journey and know exactly where to park? With a parking app you can do just that, and these apps aim to help you find the cheapest most convenient parking spots. The AA Parking App helps to find real-time parking spaces, find opening times and cheapest prices based on our location/destination, covering all free and paid car parks in the UK. Parkopedia is a global encyclopedia for parking spots, with 25 million parking spaces in 30 different countries.

3 – Track your car

If you’re like us, you probably forget where you’ve parked your car in large and busy parking lots. Find My Car is a simple but useful app that makes use of GPS services and Internet connectivity to help you find your way back to your parked car! Download on iOS or Android

4 – Remember your parking ticket

Like Find My Car, Honk also helps you remember where you’ve parked, but with the added benefit of alerting you when your parking meter is about to run out and avoiding any hefty fines! Download HONK on iOS or Android

5 – Maintain your ride

GoPoint App is only available to download on iOS, but it’s a super simple car maintenance app that allows you to quickly see how efficient your car is by providing you with measurements on things like engine RPM, engine load value, engine coolant temperature, fuel economy, and other performance metrics.

6 – Drive Safe(ly)

DriveSafe.ly is an innovative free app that reads out your text messages whilst our driving. This means you’re not being distracted by looking at your phone and reading messages yourself, so you can keep your eyes where they should be – on the road ahead.

7 – Don’t be a Speed Demon

Now whilst we don’t condone reckless driving, we appreciate that getting a speeding ticket when you’re doing a little over the limit can be frustrating. If you need to be pre-warned about speed cameras and speed traps, then Fuzz Alert would be a great app for you to try, as it helps you to locate approaching speed traps, and red light cameras.

 8 – Keep accident records

None of us want to be involved in a car accident, but the fact remains that they happen all the time. If you’re caught in a car accident, it’s useful to be able to record details about the accident quickly and easily, for insurance purposes. iWrecked is available on iOS and Android, and enables you to keep a history of all the relevant details of the accident, preview and forward accident reports, and search for towing services.

9 – How’s your car performing?

Sure, your car dash board shows you your speed and your fuel level, but additional data is often needed to fully understand how your car is performing so you can keep it in optimum shape. There a tons of diagnostic apps out there, but we especially love ones that you can connect to your car’s existing head unit. Torque Pro acts as a car performance scanner and diagnostic tool, and issues warnings to your phone via the app. It allows you to access your engine’s diagnostics in order to read diagnostic fault codes, performance data and more.

10 – Trip Adviser for your car

Waze is a traffic and navigation app, that keeps you updated with traffic conditions, maps, live-routing, smart voice-assisted navigation, road hazards, and even notifies when a Facebook friend is heading towards the same destination!
